Jerry Brown Pitcher

By Carol Pitcher Gregory (sister)

Obituary, Bear Lake News-Examiner, Vol. 74 No 24, August 15,1968

Jerry was born Sept. 27,1942 in Cornish, Cache, Utah to Elton Brown & Mary Fife Pitcher. He had 3 older sisters and one younger brother.

He went to grade school in Cornish and Lewiston. Graduated from Lewiston Jr. High and North Cache High School.

I remember when he fell out of the top of the barn. Uncle Val said the sound he made when he hit the floor; he thought he was dead. Jerry learned how to work hard at an early age. In fact, he was so little when he drove the tractor, he could hardly reach the brakes.

He and Larry, our brother, had to go out and help with the milking and the cows chores every night and every night they would start wrestling and fighting & Daddy would have to go and get them. He would come in the front door and they would run out the back door.

After Daddy died, Jerry and Minnie went to live with Uncle Val and Aunt Doris so he continued working on the farm. After he graduated, he came to live with Larry and I in Preston, Idaho. We had a lot of fun when he stayed with us. He worked for Larry's Dad on the farm and when he turned 19, they sent him on a mission.

When he lived in Wellsville, he and Lonny went to work for Uncle Doug Fife and they came to live with us.

Jerry and Jeannie's temple work was done by her Aunt some years ago. He was a wonderful brother, always making funny remarks. Even though our time together was short, I treasure all the memories.

Three young Cokeville men were killed and three women passengers were injured at about 9:30 p.m., Friday when the late model sport car in which they were riding westward got out of control on US 30N. They hurtled an irrigation ditch and came to a crashing stop on the left side of the highway at a point one-half mile west of the uptown street and highway intersection.

Thought to have been killed instantly on being thrown from the car were Eugene Milton Bagley, 25, Ward Thomas Nelson, 21, and Jerry Brown Pitcher, 25. Injured most seriously at the time was Mrs. Jeanne Ann Igo Pitcher, 21, wife of Jerry Brown Pitcher who was killed. The other two girls suffering injuries were Juana Marie Ziegler, 18, student at the University of Wyoming, and Mrs. Pamela Smith Igo, on a visit from Lander, widow of the late John Igo, Jr. of Cokeville.

The young men and women had been at the home of Jack Igo, Sr. in Cokeville a few minutes before the accident and decided to drive to another residence. Miss Ziegler got behind the wheel, and the two women companions sat in the front seat of the car owned by Mr. Bagley. The three men were in the space behind the front bucket seats.

The car, according to reliable reports, was stopped at the intersection and turned to the left on US 30N. The car got out of control some distance from the point it came to rest, one-half mile from the Cokeville and two-tenths of a mile from the home of Mr. Bagley and his mother, Mrs. Ida Bagley.

Mrs. Igo, first of the three women to recover from the affects of the accident, was able to get on the highway and seek help. Tourists from Utah, whose names were not available, reportedly saw the accident. They brought Miss Ziegler to the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital.

Lynn Dimond and Vern Walton saw Mrs. Igo and soon persons in the community were apprised of the tragic occurrence.

Mrs. Pitcher was brought to the hospital in a Cokeville ambulance and Mrs. Igo by Mrs. Russell (Flora) Dayton.

Miss Ziegler, who condition was reported as "fairly good" was taken in the Mathews Ambulance to the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sunday, and Mrs. Pitcher, reported in "fair" condition was transferred Monday to the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Jerry Brown Pitcher was born 27 Sep 1942 at Cornish, Cache, Utah to Elton Brown and Mary Fife Pitcher. He fulfilled a mission for the LDS Church, 1961-1963, and was a graduate of Utah State University. He was associated with the Cokeville Land and Livestock Company. Besides his widow, Jeanne Ann Igo Pitcher, he is survived by one brother and three sisters, Wendell Leon (Lonny) of Rexburg, Idaho; Mrs. Ralph (Pauline) Rowher of Brigham City, Utah; Mrs. Larry (Carol) Gregory of Wellsville, Utah; and Mrs. Don (Arminta) Harger of Redlands, CA.

Services for Mr. Pitcher were at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, in the Cornish L.D.S. Ward Chapel with Bp. Paul S. McKnight conducting. Interment was in the Smithfield, Utah City Cemetery and the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Leslie A. Gregory.

Following the family prayer by Lewis Boman, the choir sang, "Oh My Father." Martha Dalley gave the obituary and speakers were Kay Neeley and President S. Reed Dayton of Cokeville. Other musical selections were vocal duet, Sherrie and Vickie Gregory, and a vocal duet, Clair and Beverly Hollingsworth. Valden Pitcher gave the benediction. Pallbearers were John, Ray, and Ralph Pitcher, Darrell Greaves and Boyd Boman.

Matthews Mortuary directed the funeral. He is buried in Smithfield Cemetery next to our parents.
