Archibald McFarland

I, Archibald McFarland was born December 17, 1882 in the Parish of Dysart Fife, Scotland. I became a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on the 27 of April 1843. I was ordained to the lessor Priesthood by Elder John Russel in 1853 laboring as a missionary until the time of our leaving in 1854 arriving in Salt Lake September 25, 1855.

Worked one year in the Red Butte Quarry getting out rock for the foundation of the Salt Lake Temple. Moved to American Fork Utah in the fall of 1856, was there ordained an Elder under the hands of John Currie. Labored as a teacher in American Fork until the time of our leaving for Weber County. Left American Fork on 10 March 1859 for Weber County arriving on the Weber River March 17, 1859. Bought a claim from Captain James Brown on the west side of the Weber River where we settled. I was called to preside over the West Weber ward until 1873 when I was called on a mission to Great Britian, leaving for my filed of labor on the 20th day of October of that year. Labored until the fall of 1875 part of that time in New Castle conference where I was called to preside and part of the time in Scotland arriving home October 5, 1875.

During my absence the United Order was organized and I was called upon and was baptized a member of that order on my arrival home. I acted as teacher of the ward until the raid commenced against the people for plural marriage, when I had to leave home and hid myself. Leaving for England again on the 15th of Feb 1886, laboring there as president of the Scottish Mission until June 1887 when I returned home.

Shortly after this I was arrested and after a good deal of delay and court proceedings I was sentenced on June 6 1891 to serve three months in the Utah Penitentiary which I did being released the last of March 1891. This prosecution cost me nearly all my forty years earnings having nearly 3000 head of sheep and nearly 100 of cattle and a bunch of well bred horses.

During my labors in the Ministry abroad I gathered a great deal of genealogy of my fathers, and have now done baptismal work in the temple for nearly 3,000 of my dead and have had endowments for nearly 1000.

In 1910 I was ordained a High Priest under the hands of C. F. Middleton and became a member of that quorum. In 1912 I was called upon to take charge of the genealogical Society of the stake. From my earliest childhood until the present time. I have been busily engaged as a church worker and pioneer and the raising of a large family and my interest in Gods work is not one iota abated and hope it never will. Amen.
