Jeremiah was five years old when his mother died giving birth to her fourth child, who also died. The following year his father brought his family to Utah. They lived in Ogden for a year and then moved to Payson.

After Jeremiah was married, they settled in Payson where six of their seven children were born. By 1882 the family had moved to Burrville in Sevier County, Utah. His wife died four days after the birth of their seventh child.

At some point after this, he moved his family to Sanford, Conejos, Colorado, where he married again and had two more children.
