John was only nine years old when his parents died just 10 days apart. He was probably raised by his maternal grandparents along with the other three children. In 1827 they lived in Pickering Township in Eastern Canada where they ran a sawmill. It was here that he met his future bride.

Shortly after their marriage they moved to a farm of their own. John built a sawmill on his place which he ran until they moved 10 miles further where he built a mill and a home on Duffins Creek. Timber was plentiful but so were wild animals. In 1836 they sold this home and the mill intending to go to a warmer climate for John's health.

About this time they met John Taylor who taught them the gospel. After cutting a hole through ice, they were baptized. In February 1838 they left Canada to join the saints in Kirtland, Ohio. From there, they followed the saints to Missouri and then to Nauvoo. Here he worked on the Temple but soon had to leave because of the mobs.

They lived in Winter Quarters where he built a shop to make and repair wagons for those going west. Finally in 1850 he and his family decided that he should leave and go west and make a home for them. He settled in Lehi. His family joined him in 1851.

In January 1852, he moved his family to Provo where he and his son built a saw and grist mill. In the fall of 1874, he and his wife went to St. George and stayed a few months. He died two years later.
