John and Elizabeth made their home in Graveley, Cambridge, England, when they were first married. All seven children were born there.

He attended the community church until he started having doubts about the doctrines. His pastor told him he had a brother who was involved with a new church so maybe he should look into that. The brother was Joseph Fielding. John took every opportunity to learn from him and was baptized in 1840. He was made branch president until they left for America.

John and his family left England in 1849. They stopped in Cincinnati, Ohio, and John found work and a place to live. The children went to school. They remained there two years before going on to lowa. At Council Bluffs, John bought a farm where they lived for the next five years in order to get on top financially.

They left there in 1857, arriving in the Valley that fall. They went on to Ogden to see their older daughter, Mary, who had preceded them. They went south during the problems with Johnston's Army and then returned and settled in Slaterville by the Weber River. He bought a farm there but the flooding each spring soon persuaded him to sell out and buy other property in North Ogden where they spent the rest of their lives.

John had little schooling but he became quite a scholar. He loved to learn. He was well thought of and remained active in the church.
