The family was deeply religious and often had the local minister to Sunday dinner. They were introduced to the gospel by friends who had embraced it. Hannah's father joined right away but her mother waited for six years to be baptized. The family emigrated to America on the ship "Samuel Curling" in 1855. They crossed the plains with the Milo Andrus Company, arriving in Salt Lake City on 24 Oct 1855. Hannah's brother had come on ahead and met them. They first settled in Spanish Fork where her father built a two-story home. Within a year Hannah and her four sisters were married. Hannah married James McFarland in Dec 1855. They lived in American Fork, Utah before moving to West Weber, Utah where she spent the remainder of her life. Hannah was the mother of eleven children. She never lost her Scottish accent and reminisced of her beautiful Scotland. She and her sisters all married Scottish men, and so were surrounded in their new homeland by rich Scottish influences. She was an articulate housekeeper and a devoted mother. Hannah died in Wilson, Weber, Utah in Jan 1915, and her husband died just ten months later in Nov 1915. |
