Erastus Francis spent his boyhood in and around Nauvoo, Illinois, until coming to Utah in 1851. When his mother decided she couldn't live under polygamy, after they had reached the Valley she took Erastus and stayed in Salt Lake, while her husband and his other wives moved to Provo.

She eventually married a widower, John Snyder, who became a good father to Erastus. He saw that Erastus was well educated and taught a good trade. He became a mason and carpenter and helped build many of the early homes in the valley. Erastus had a brother Isaac Morley who died as an infant. Both brothers were sealed to their mother and her second husband, John Snyder.

Erastus acted as body guard for Brigham Young for many years and was chief of police for a time in Salt Lake. He had a beautiful voice and was active in social affairs.

After marriage, they lived in Salt Lake until after the birth of their second child, then they moved to Laketown in Bear Lake County. As sheriff, he did much to bring law and order to the area. After several years, they moved back to Salt Lake and then to Park Valley in Box Elder County. After a time they moved back to Salt Lake, where they stayed until 1883. Then they moved back to Park Valley where they lived out their lives.

At various times he was a Justice of the Peace, sheriff and performed many marriages. He helped build many homes and made caskets. He loved the young folks and often arranged dances. At one time he got gangrene in his leg and it had to be amputated. He never complained but went on with his life as best he could. He was not a church-going man but always taught his family to fulfill their church duties. He was well-loved by young and old alike.
