Clinton, his parents and their children were baptized into the Mormon Church between 1842-45 in Brownstown, Wayne, Michigan. His father was prominent and prosperous. Soon the persecution began and the family traveled to Nauvoo where they only remained about three weeks. They then traveled on to Winter Quarters. Clinton enlisted in the Mormon Battalion and his family went on without him.

His experiences with the Mormon Battalion were not pleasant and he was grateful when he was able to return to the Valley. He met Lovisa and after their marriage they moved to Ogden where he was assigned to make and keep peace with the Indians. He served an Indian Mission to Malad Valley. Following that, he was sent to Fillmore, Millard, Utah in 1857.

In 1861 they moved to Huntsville. Clinton was Captain of the Huntsville Scouts, trained to defend the settlement. He saw much action with the Indians. The Indians called him "Inka Pony" because of his red hair. He was known as one of the bravest men who ever walked the earth. He preached that people should never pick a fight with the Indians, but if necessary, to fight back.

They finally settled in Willard, Utah. He died at Soda Springs, Idaho.
