Leman's father and grandfather served in the Revolutionary War. After the war, his parents moved their family to Green County, New York. As a young man, he left there and settled in Mentor, Ohio, where he built a log cabin. In 1825-7, he moved his family to Brownstown, Michigan where his farm became very prosperous, and he became a prominent member of the community.

He resisted the Mormon missionaries for some time but he and his entire family were finally baptized between 1842 and 1845. When the persecution commenced, he moved his family to Nauvoo. After three weeks there, they began their journey west. His son enlisted in with the Mormon Battalion.

The captain, George Miller, was put in charge of a company of saints to find suitable camp sites that would sustain the large companies coming west. After a time, Brigham Young sent a letter telling him to go back to Winter Quarters, but he refused and said nothing to his group. They stopped at a Ponca village but were attacked by a group of Sioux Indians. They commenced to build houses and a make-shift fort, but the entire community was almost entirely destroyed by a fire that burned all the grass. Many died.

In 1847, Elder E.T. Benson came and spoke with Bishop Miller and the group was persuaded to return to Winter Quarters. Leman's wife died during that winter. The following year the Company arrived in the Valley. Leman served a mission in Michigan until he was stricken by an illness. He died at Taylor, Michigan, at his son's home.
