John was the first of his family to join the church and emigrate to Utah. He was a prosperous farmer and farmed ll9 acres. He was a religious man and a church warden in the Church of England. When he met the elders in the fall of 1851, he was instantly converted and baptized the same night. By this time he had 10 children and several grandchildren.

John and Elizabeth left England with their youngest son and three daughters. They landed in Philadelphia and traveled by train to Pittsburgh, then by boat to St. Louis, and then to Atchison, Kansas, where they purchased a wagon and equipment for the trip west. Their captain, Mr. Secrist, became ill and died enroute, and Mr. Guymon took over.

Upon their arrival in the Valley, they went to Ogden and then to Slaterville. They went south when Johnston's army came, but later returned to their home. Elizabeth lived only a dozen years and died. John remarried at the age of 75. John died from Erysipelas.
