Mary Elizabeth Bean was born in Illinois, April 17, 1839, the youngest child in her family. Her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and came to Utah in 1848 with the Daniel Miller Company. They went directly to Provo and were among the first settlers there. They first lived at the Old Fort, but finally moved to an area which was close to where Indians were located. They could see and hear the Indians dancing and giving their war whoops. Mary Elizabeth said the people were kept busy trying to quell the Indians who were on the war path most of the time. Mary Elizabeth married Amos Whitecomb Haws on December 27, 1855, in Provo, Utah. She became the Mother of six sons and four daughters. Because of the scarcity of fruits and vegetables, scurvy was bad at times among the people. The family used sego roots, artichoke and other roots as substitutes for vegetables. When they could raise table beets, they would boil the water the beets had been cooked in until it was thick, and then use it as molasses which was a great treat. Mary Elizabeth's husband lost his life in an accident in May, 1888. She often expressed the hope that she would not live to be a care to anyone. Her desire was realized on the morning of September 25, 1895, when she passed quietly from this life. She was fifty-six years old at the time. Mary Elizabeth was a true pioneer woman who knew the trials and tribulations of the early settlers of Utah.
