Richard Owens was born at Marianashire, North Wales. He was the son of William and Eleanor Evans Owens. He was baptized on October 12, 1848 by David Peters.

He came to America with his parents in the spring of 1849. While on the boat going up the Mississippi River, he was stricken with cholera and died. He was buried on the banks of the river on May 18, 1849.
